Wonders of nature walk through the Auer Ried
Enjoy a walk through an ancient landscape rich in culture.
The power of water, geology, environmental protection, ancient cultural landscapes and the mighty Kanisfluh constitute some of the themes featured in these nature lovers’ walks. In the Auer Ried wetland over 50 rare plants flourish. The marshy meadows and grassy slopes with their typical haymakers’ huts are criss-crossed by streams and scattered with small woods and ponds.
Holdamoos discovery centre
The pride and joy of the Holdamoos Nature Discovery Centre is the 430 year-old mountain alm hut, known as a Vorsäss hut, which would otherwise have been sold or demolished. Due to the lack of alterations over a period of many years, the hut has been preserved in its original form, with its kitchen, parlour, parental bedroom, barn, lean-to, hay-making floor and goat shed practically unchanged over the centuries. The place absolutely oozes atmosphere.
Almland walk
A rural time trip through spring grazing settlements, high alms and alpine grasslands.
A year in the life of a local farmer was and still is typified by a “nomadic” system of agriculture, split between the valley floor and the high almlands. This traditional method of farming revolves around movement up and down the mountain. This almland walk enables you to put time and space into perspective. Details about life on the alm and its cultural heritage are to be found on stone information boards along the route. More than 14 information points on the sunny slopes above Au inform the walker about the meadows and farmsteads in the valley, early summer almland grazing settlements, high alm agriculture and alpine grasslands.
The little Wälderbähnle railway
Take a train ride on one of the historical old-timers, and experience the gentle hilly scenery at the more sedate pace of bygone years. The "WÄLDERBÄHNLE" railway operates from May to October between Bezau and Schwarzenberg. The over 100 year old steam engine, which alternates with a historical diesel locomotive, can be seen puffing along through the beautiful countryside, to the delight of the many holidaymakers.
Inatura
The inatura in Dornbirn is one of Europe's most modern natural history museums, with the emphasis on experimenting, testing and discovering. Visitors are encouraged to touch things and wonder about them; the interactive displays are guaranteed to educate and amaze young and old alike.
Rappenloch gorge
Rappenloch and Alploch in Ebnit are two of the biggest gorges in the Eastern Alps…. a spectacular natural phenomenon! The imposing Rappenloch gorge, situated at the access point to the Walser village of Ebnit, approx. five kilometres from the centre of Dornbirn, is one of the largest gorges in central Europe. Impressive rock walls tower on either side of the ravine; narrow footbridges, dark tunnels, precipitous flights of steps and interesting little waterfalls promise a stimulating walk for anyone passing through.
